ABOUT

Fossilised Coral Botryoidal Agate

Introducing to Laura’s Crystal Tea U.K. is Fossilised Coral with Botryoidal Agate.

These stunning and extremely rare specimens are hand dug in Florida, USA by a small independent miner who hunts for these corals and other fossils. All of these Coral are aged at around 20 million years old, from coral polyps that died and where the buried, turning into the fossils we are showing. These specimens are in fact important fossils that are additionally popular and immensely beautiful mineral specimens.

Coral create a type of skeleton by the soft-bodied animals called Polyp. They do this by secreting a hard, rock-like skeleton made of calcium carbonate.

When the polyp dies, the soft tissue decays, leaving behind the hard skeleton they created during their life. The coral remains are then buried under layers of sediment, such as sand and mud.

Over time, the original calcium carbonate skeleton can be gradually replaced by other minerals like calcite or silica, which are dissolved in groundwater.

The coral fossils are formed when the hard, calcium carbonate skeletons of dead polyps are preserved over time. They then undergo a process of replacement by minerals like calcite or silica, which is called petrification. This typically occurs when the coral remains are buried under sediment and subjected to pressure and temperature, gradually turning the skeleton into stone; a process which can take millions of years.

These fossilised coral specimens retain the original shape and structure of the coral skeleton, providing evidence of past life and environmental conditions.
