How Is Halite Formed?

The name halite is derived from the Ancient Greek word for "salt", ἅλς (háls). Halite crystals form very quickly in some rapidly evaporating lakes resulting in modern artifacts with a coating or encrustation of halite crystals. Halite predominantly occurs within sedimentary rocks where it has formed from the evaporation of seawater or salty lake water. In a rapidly crystallizing environment, the edges of the cubes simply grow faster than the centre.

Halite crystals termed hopper crystalsappear to be "skeletons" of the typical cubes. Halite is clear or colourless and it is the introduction of other algae that change the colour. Pink or Green Halite is a type of Halite that had its colour tainted from bacteria of various algae species, which die and imparting its cOllie into the Halite and Trona.

The Halite specimens in our stock at Laura’s Crystal Tea U.K. also have present the mineral called Trona. Trona is a grey mineral which occurs as an evaporite in salt deposits and consists of a hydrated carbonate and bicarbonate of sodium. The Green Trona in our specimens is also created in this colour from the dead algae mixed into the Trona from the lake beds.

Halite is the epitome of change and new beginnings.

Special Care Instructions ℹ️ 

Halite must NOT be washed as it will dissolve, therefore, it must be kept in a dry place. It must NOT be put in the sun as it sweats and then will dissolve, to preserve the specimen. We ship silica gel packets with these specimens to aid in moisture absorption. These gel sachets are perfect to be stored with these specimens and will need to be replaced from time to time. You could store these specimens in a specimen box, along with the silica gel.

Specimen Information ℹ️

Specimens should not be washed and must be handled with care. We suggest that they are placed on infrequently used furniture or shelves and display cabinets.  They do not cope with being dropped, so we urge caution when handling them.

We only ship delecate specimens in 2 strong boxes to give them maximum protection and chance to reach you in the condition we shipped it in.

We stock a limited amount of stands, so we will add them in ACCESSORIES section as we get stock in.

These are earth mined crystal, this means there will be a variation of colour, shape and size. All sizes are approximate and vary from piece to piece.
